The Sarai at Toria

Panna National Park | Superior

Born out of one couple’s passion for wildlife and conservation, The Sarai at Toria provides a riverside haven of peace and serenity, words we think it’s fair to say aren’t always associated with India.

Owners Joanna, a wildlife photographer, writer and conservationist, and Raghu, a biologist known for his pioneering research on tigers, have made every effort to ensure the property is as environmentally and culturally responsible as possible. This is an eco-resort worthy of the title, with just eight beautifully appointed rooms based on traditional village cottages. Although from the outside the look is definitely rustic, inside the décor is unexpectedly elegant, with clean lines, high ceilings, tiled floors, dark wood and traditional textiles.

Meals are an integral part of the Sarai experience, and evenings often begin convivially with drinks around the open fire, before dinner is served in the communal baithak or pavilion. Menus are comprised of delicious Indian home cooking based on Joanna and Raghu’s favourite recipes, made with locally sourced produce including herbs and salads from the resorts own gardens, and accompanied by delicious breads and pastries baked on site.

The Sarai is ideally placed for visiting the nearby Panna Tiger Reserve, one of India’s most scenic parks, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Khajuraho. Closer to home, dawn and sunset boat rides and walks through the nearby village offer a unique opportunity to experience rural India, and budding yogis can arrange to further their practice with a local expert.
