Dev Shree Deogarh

Deogarh

Walking through the manicured gardens towards Dev Shree’s stately façade, you could be forgiven for thinking that this palatial property, although sumptuous, might feel a little detached. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. This is one of the most welcoming properties you’re ever likely to stay in, offsetting its grand design with the genuine warmth of a family home. Despite its nostalgic look, this is a modern build designed to recall the intricate beauty of Rajasthan’s traditional havelis and palaces, and its construction was a labour of love for its founders who still own and live in the property.

Nestling between the region’s intermittently rocky landscape, next to a wide lake on the edges of Deogarh town, Dev Shree puts the option of safari drives and wildlife rambles tantalisingly within reach. This is perhaps the gentlest way to dip your toes into rural Rajasthan, venturing out to explore the rolling hills and dusty plains with the prospect of home-cooked, seasonal feasts and a dip in the pool to look forward to upon your return. Plunge into the region’s culture, landscape and history, and emerge fully refreshed.

Location

On the outskirts of Deogarh, in the middle of Rajasthan’s own ‘golden triangle’, this property is just a couple of hours’ drive from both Udaipur and Jodhpur, and a slightly longer drive to Jaipur.

Why we love it

Discover what to expect from staying at Dev Shree Deogarh

A warm welcome

Shatrunjai - one half of Dev Shree’s proprietary husband and wife team - is a direct descendant of the region’s ruling family, and as well as being a beautifully immersive place to stay, this regal property is very much still their home. The couple remain front and centre, creating a rich experience where guests feel completely welcome. Expect to be warmly greeted upon arrival and end up chatting with them like old friends over sundowners before long! The family’s beloved dogs are very friendly too, wagging their tails excitedly at new arrivals. This genuinely feels like a home from home.

Peak boutique

Hosting only a handful of guests at a time adds another level to the atmosphere of being welcomed into someone’s home. The effect is of an exclusive boutique, where you feel like guests at a family gathering. Meals are enjoyed together at long dining tables, encouraging conversation to flow, but if you’d prefer more time to yourself that’s absolutely fine too. Fancy exploring the local area? Head out on a guided drive with a member of the family. Want to discover more about the region’s cuisine? Get one-to-one guidance at a bespoke cookery class. This is tailored travel at its best.

Relax body and mind with a morning yoga class, go birdwatching by the lake, and learn to recreate traditional Mewari dishes in a cookery class using fresh local produce. Relax by the pool or in one of the spacious lounges, and end the evening with a cool glass of rose sherbet as you chat easily with your hosts.

Community Connections

The family do a huge amount to support their community, particularly with regards to education, including building a school for local girls to attend and funding uniforms and textbooks for over 3,000 other local children. They refurbish second-hand shoes to distribute to children who need them, which also provides employment for the community, and they've funded the construction of two basketball courts to be used by local players.
