Travel onwards to the historic and cultural treasure trove that is the north-western state of Rajasthan, the ‘Land of Kings’. Dotting the surrounding countryside are tranquil villages that offer unparalleled opportunities to explore traditional rural life. You can even mix in a safari to try and spot some of India’s regal wildlife.

Indian palaces & forts you can stay in

India is home to many amazing palaces, forts, heritage buildings and stately homes that have been renovated back to their former glory, and turned into fabulous places to stay, including some that are run by descendants of the Maharajas, who lost their power when the central government took control in the mid 20th century. You will still find hundreds of their ancestral homes scattered throughout India, which were left to fall into ruins, but are now, thankfully, being revived by families who are returning to breathe new life into the old stones.
