Tumbang Malahoi Longhouse

Tumbang Malahoi | Other

Although many people visit Kalimantan to observe orang-utan in their natural habitat, the rainforests of Borneo are also home to the Iban people, whose thriving tribal culture can be experienced first hand during an overnight homestay in the Tumbang Malahoi Longhouse.

The longhouse is the mothership of Iban society, with dozens of families living in one interconnected structure. Each family has their own quarters, which open on to a communal area, and each longhouse has its own committee to oversee decisions and disputes.

Although accommodation is typically basic, the food is fantastic and the welcome a warm one; guests eat and drink with the tribe, and sleep in their host family’s quarters, with a family member always on hand to show them around the village.
