Remote in the true sense of the word, Utopia is a world away from the constant tech rush of modern life, in all possible ways. A visit here is a gift to yourself of time away from the internet and all its doom-scrolling pitfalls; time to reconnect with what matters to you, and to connect, perhaps for the first time, with the beautiful landscape of this lesser-visited region of Indonesia.
Though not directly next to the ocean, both surfing and yoga play a large part in the hotel’s activities offering. The island’s top-class surf attracts surfers from around the world, and the resort can help everyone from beginners to experts get out into the waves. Take daily yoga classes to centre your mind, or go all out with a week-long retreat. Snorkel, dive or kayak just offshore, and discover some of the rare joys of living truly off-grid.

On the western tip of Rote Island, to the south-west of Timor, this laid-back, sustainable resort can be reached either by ferry from Kupang, West Timor, or by a short flight.

Worth the journey

Family-friendly
Having been started by a couple just beginning a family of their own, the resort welcomes children of all ages, and despite its remote location, is very a relaxed and friendly. Ideal for a family holiday with minimal stress and a bit of adventure.
What can you do there?
Walk along pristine beaches and through thick inland forests and mangroves. Unwind with daily yoga classes and further your practice with more in-depth yoga tuition. Head out onto the water to snorkel and dive around the nearby coral reef, kayak or take a boat trip on the surface or, of course, enjoy the world-class surf.
Sustainability Focus
The Utopia’s commitment to sustainable hospitality is the real deal. They understand the privilege of being located in such pristine surroundings, and go out of their way to keep them so. Describing itself as ‘fully off grid’, the resort provides 100% of its own energy through solar power, repurposes grey water in the garden, composts its food waste, recycles plastic waste into eco-bricks, and provides much of the produce used in the meals from its own organic smallholding onsite. They have even fitted a compost toilet for each suite!
