Surya Shanti Villa

Sidemen | First Class

Tucked away on a forested hillside in Bali’s mountainous Sidemen region, the Surya Shanti is a peaceful retreat away from the rush and heat of the coast.

Just a handful of thatched villas sprinkled between the trees on a rugged hillside, the resort is simple and unassuming yet offers good quality accommodation, food and amenities and, of course, the stunning views. Due to its fairly steep location, we don’t recommend this hotel if you have mobility difficulties, but if you enjoy a hike it could be just right.

Surprisingly, given the traditional appearance of the exteriors, the suites feel very modern. Crisp, clean lines, geometric shapes and vibrant colours blend with intricately-carved dark woods and bamboo thatch in a well-balanced fusion of traditional and contemporary design. The floor-to-ceiling glass doors fold away completely to link the interior with the balcony, adding brightness and a sense of space. The Villa Mezanine are ideal for families and feature a bedroom on the ground floor and second bedroom on a higher mezzanine level.

The resort utilizes the breathtaking views well, and both pools are in spots where you need do nothing more than lay back in the warm waters and gaze out across the valley. Similarly, the relaxing effect of the spa treatments is enhanced by the outdoor massage area where you can feel the refreshing breezes on your skin as you unwind.

There are plenty of active pursuits available too, such as trekking and bike hire, but the resort is most well-known for its cookery classes. Here, you can learn to prepare traditional Indonesian dishes in the fabulous outdoor kitchen under the guidance of experienced chefs, and enjoy the fruits of your labors on the terrace as evening draws in.

We Say

A chilled-out, low-key resort with a warm welcome and a sense of place.
