Sumba Nautil Resort

Lamboya | First Class

A two hour scenic drive from Tambolaka airport, passing traditional villages, brings you to the south west corner of the island and the remote setting of Sumba Nautil Resort. This charming resort enjoys spectacular views from its lofty vantage point: on a sloping headland overlooking the Indian Ocean, a 30-minute brisk walk from the wild Marosi Beach (a popular surfing spot).

Built from local materials by Indonesian craftsmen, the property evokes a true sense of place. The seven rustic-style cottages are comfortably furnished, with plenty of space in which to relax, and all feature a balcony overlooking the gardens or with views towards the ocean. Décor is provided in the form of local artefacts, hanging pieces of hand-woven ikat and furniture made from local wood.

Facilities are limited to a swimming pool and well-stocked dive centre, although there are no instructors so divers need to be experienced. Meals are served in an airy traditional-style restaurant alongside a surprisingly extensive wine list (possibly influenced by Nautil’s French owner). Don’t expect a Balinese style beach resort: Sumba Nautil is somewhere to kick back, soak up the stunning natural scenery and appreciate the peace and simplicity of the surrounds: explore the reefs at low tide and take leisurely walks along the beach.
