With its deceptively simple boutique wooden bungalows, and wonderful traditional rural setting, Sanak Retreat represents Bali at its absolute best. Set up by philanthropists to be run by an Indonesian family, this retreat is socially sensitive, sustainable and thoroughly gorgeous throughout!
The local area practises a very ancient form of agriculture, so socially and environmentally significant that UNESCO protects five sites on Bali where it’s practised. The Sanak’s handful of bungalows overlook this peaceful rural setting, and each has a comfortably furnished terrace on which to relax and enjoy the scenery. Inside, the bungalows are spacious and beautifully presented in a contemporary Balinese style, with gleaming teak floors and walls, carved wooden furniture, natural textures, tastefully selected local textiles and artistic curios.
The Sanak’s restaurant enjoys views over the surrounding paddy fields and serves predominantly Indonesian dishes prepared using veggies from the retreat’s very own organic garden, rice from the nearby farms, and other fresh ingredients from further afield in Bali. Private dining, barbecues and picnics are also available - guests can have a private chef and waiter attend in their bungalow if desired - and the lovely bar serves unusual drinks in an eclectic setting.
The freshwater pool is set into green lawns and has a shallow platform area for kids, and the retreat’s spa offers a selection of extremely well-priced traditional treatments that use locally produced natural products.
We SayWe love this place - it’s peaceful, unassuming and naturally gorgeous
