Ora Beach Resort
Seram Island | Standard
Ora Beach Resort is an isolated property on the north coast of Seram Island, accessible only by longtail boat.
There’s no denying that it’s a bit of a schlep to get to Ora Beach Resort: we’re talking a five to six-hour journey from Ambon by fast ferry, car and longtail boat. However, it’s well worth the effort for the remote scenic setting alone. Dramatically dwarfed by rugged cliffs and forest-covered peaks, this rustic resort is perched on the edge of a lagoon, overlooking the wide bay of Teluk Sawai.
Accommodation comprises of wooden, thatch-roofed huts that blend seamlessly with the natural surrounds. Choose from a semi-detached beachfront cottage that peers out from the jungle, or a bungalow balanced on stilts over the lagoon’s turquoise waters. Cottage interiors are simple and uncluttered: expect polished wooden floors and unadorned walls, with minimal facilities. You’ll struggle to get a mobile signal and there’s no TV or wi-fi to distract you, leaving you plenty of time to soak up the beauty of your location from the private balcony of your cottage.
Whilst this undoubtedly reads like paradise - and to some it certainly will be - it is important to note that the resort is basic and so expectations should be kept in context - this is a standard category (our lowest grade) resort, not a Maldivian 6* big hitter! Workmanship is lacking in most parts of the build, there are countless imperfections and the standards of service and levels of English spoken are very 'local'.
The waters of Teluk Sawai are so clear that you can view the coral and marine life without venturing in more than ankle deep, or even stepping off your balcony if you’re staying in an overwater cottage. When you’re not face down, snorkel clad, exploring the underwater world, while away your time dozing in a hammock and dining on Indonesian cuisine at the overwater restaurant.
