Kumano Kodo | Superior
’Getting away from it all’ is taken to another level at Hotel Nakanoshima, a charming ryokan-style hotel on a tiny, secluded island just off the coast of Katsuura. The short ferry journey across to the hotel starts your trip off in a rather romantic style, and once there you can enjoy the much-praised dining, the relaxing hot-springs and the waves gently lapping against the shore.
Each guestroom is furnished in traditional ryokan style with tatami mat flooring, low chabudai tables and futon beds with the addition of modest, western-style washrooms. A soft palette of cream, honey, pebble and peach is offset with dark woods and bold borders. Translucent screen doors slide apart to lead you onto the balcony where you can enjoy sweeping views over the bay and across to the mainland.
Those views can also be enjoyed while having a soak in the hotel’s outdoor hot-spring baths, named ‘Kishu Chomon no Yu’ (‘listening to the Kishu surf’) after the sound of the sea that adds its soporific soundtrack. There is also a large indoor bath filled from the natural hot spring, private individual pools, and an outdoor foot-bath for soothing tired toes.
As you might expect from the hotel’s coastal position, seafood features highly in the well-renowned restaurant where the menu offers a tempting array of dishes including traditional Japanese multi-course dining, hot rice bowls and beautifully-prepared fresh sashimi. A breakfast buffet sets you up for the day, whether you’re off back to the mainland to trek along forest trails and visit shrines, or simply want to spend time immersed in the island’s healing spring waters.
We SayA chilled-out island sanctuary perfect for a relaxing hot-spring break.
