Hoshinoya

Kyoto | Ryokan

Nestled on the wooded banks of the Hozugawa River in the temple-rich Arashiyama district, Hoshinoya is accessible from Kyoto by a lazy 10 minute boat journey in a traditional cedar wood boat: a magical arrival that sets the tone for the rest of the Hoshinoya experience.

Previously the retreat of a Kyoto merchant, the property comprises of a handful of traditional buildings that have been carefully restored and infused with contemporary, sophisticated touches. Guest rooms thoughtfully balance traditional features – hand blocked wallpaper, sliding doors and deep cedar wood bath tubs - with modern comforts such as heated wooden floors, dark slate bathrooms and raised beds (instead of the more traditional futon). Large picture windows offer views of the river and the natural surroundings, with the occasional monkey viewing!

Uninterrupted views can also be enjoyed, along with complimentary snacks, from one of the comfortable sofas in the library lounge, stocked with a variety of books on Kyoto. Aside from its idyllic setting, dining at Hoshinoya is another highlight. Breakfast is a lavish in-room experience that can take up to 15 minutes to set up! Dinner is equally impressive: served in the funky dining room, the Kaiseki inspired menu offers authentic Kyoto cuisine with a modern twist.

We Say
A serene riverside retreat that feels a world away from nearby Kyoto. Particularly picturesque during cherry blossom season.
