Tsumago | Ryokan
This family-run property in the heart of Tsumago is the epitome of a traditional Japanese ryokan, offering simple accommodation, outstanding home-cooked cuisine and genuine, bountiful hospitality.
Housed in a 100-year old wooden building, surrounded by neat, tranquil Japanese gardens, Fujioto consists of just nine guest rooms that are traditionally furnished with tatami mats, sliding shoji screens and futon bedding. There are no en-suite rooms, but the shared facilities are spotlessly clean and it’s possible to reserve the communal ’hinoki’ bath (made from scented cypress wood) for private use.
Although the accommodation is on the simple-side and facilities are shared, the service levels at Fujioto more than compensate. The ryokan has been owned by the Fujihara family for generations and every guest is welcomed like a family friend, with nothing too much trouble. However, the real highlight of any stay at Fujioto has to be the dining. Expect a beautifully presented, gastronomic feast of home grown and locally sourced produce, such as trout caught in the nearby Nakatsugawa River, rice from surrounding paddy fields and even local bee larvae! Some of the food may not be familiar but the staff, as helpful as ever, explain the meal dish-by-dish.
We SayA special place with a wonderfully friendly ambiance, offering some of the best food you will eat in Japan.
