Yak Hotel

Lhasa | Standard

A central location and real sense of place make the Yak Hotel a sociable and relaxed base for exploring Lhasa. Whether you’re taking the 5-minute walk to Jokhang Temple, enjoying a cooling cup of Tibetan tea on the terrace, or chatting to a group of Russian climbers who’ve just tackled Everest (as happened to our Destination Specialist, Ed!), the Yak Hotel provides a simple, down-to-earth package that appeals to the adventurous.

Leading off from bright corridors carpeted in red and gold, the guest rooms are low-lit, cosy shelters where you can rest away from the hubbub. Wooden floors, cream walls and warm, amber lighting cocoon comfortable sleeping areas, and snug armchairs invite you to settle in for a few quiet moments with a good book. Cleverly-designed en-suites slot into corners; choose a room with a bathtub for post-sightseeing soaks. There are some thoughtful details that bring in traditional Tibetan culture: carved furniture, eternal knot motifs and bright paintwork that lift the space.

On-site facilities are modest but enough for everyday needs. Book a back or foot massage to ease the aches after a day’s wandering, find a quiet corner to savour a refreshing cuppa, or sip an evening beer on the roof terrace looking towards the Potala Palace. The hotel has a partnership with the Dunya restaurant next door, which offers the ideal combination of good food and a genial ambiance. Run by an excellent team, under the direction of proprietors Fred and Jannette, the restaurant serves a variety of local and international dishes for lunch and dinner. It’s also where you’ll stumble down to grab a bite of breakfast and a fortifying pre-sightseeing coffee each morning! A homely environment to chat, chill out and soak up the character.

We Say
‘Right in the heart of things, amongst the best location in town. It’s the kind of place where you meet and chat with people easily.’
