Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse

Qomolangma NP | Other

High in Tibet’s Himalayan foothills, with unparalleled views of Mt Everest, the Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse offers a down-to-earth, vibrant and visceral taste of this extraordinary part of the world. As you would expect from the remote location, the guesthouse facilities are very rudimentary, and this is certainly one for more adventurous travellers, but the scenery and experience make it worthwhile.

The single-storey guesthouse building, situated next to the monastery itself, contains a mixture of private and dormitory-style accommodation. The rooms are simple and functional, with whitewashed walls, carpet and plain wooden beds. Though reminiscent of the spartan interiors of monastic cells, plenty of blankets are provided to keep you cosy during the chilly Himalayan nights, and splashes of bright colour in the curtains and furniture, as well as in the pictures on the wall, add a homely edge. Bathroom facilities are the sparsest element, with hot water available but no showers, and basic squat toilets in a separate block a short walk away.

The focus is firmly on appreciating the spiritual atmosphere of Qomolangma National Park; take a tour of the monastery, see Everest at sunrise and soak up the region’s tranquility. Enjoy simple meals, and warming cups of tea and coffee, as you chat with fellow guests in the communal dining room. The view from the monastery draws photographers here from around the world, but no trip is complete without a journey to Everest Base Camp where you can feel the excitement of those setting out to conquer Everest’s slopes, see the iconic yellow expedition tents in the valley below, and even stay overnight in a tent hostel at the foot of this magnificent mountain.

We Say
An incredibly spiritual place; minimal facilities but the very best access to the Tibetan foothills of Mt Everest.
