Laos weather & when to go: April
April overview
April in Laos is hot, hot, hot! Being the final month of Laos' dry season, days are typically sunny and rain-free, although the odd shower should be expected towards the end of the month.
April's weather in detail
April is typically one of the hottest months of the year in Laos. It's not unlikely for the thermostat to hit 40°C, especially in Pakse and the 4000 Islands region in the south of the country, whilst temperatures hover around a rather warm 30°C in Vientiane and Luang Prabang. Despite high temperatures humidity levels remain around 70%.
Towards the end of the month showers become more likely as the wet season approaches, especially in the northern regions around Phongsali, although these tend to be infrequent and short lived and won’t affect travel.
Months of minimal rainfall mean the river levels are low at this time of year, making river cruising particularly problematic.

Bun Pi Mai (Laos New Year)
Between approx. 13th - 15th April (varies each year) Laos comes to a standstill with government offices, many markets and some tourist sites closing for the holiday. Seemingly the entire population of Laos takes to the streets and soaks each other with water …it’s all taken in very good spirit, even by the police and military. If you don’t want to get wet, stay inside or get out of the country – there is no alternative!
