Bangkok - 3 nights

Bangkok, Thailand’s capital since 1782, is a bustling metropolis that simply mustn't be missed. Bubbling with energy, this city is always on the go, endlessly reinventing itself with fabulous new hotels, a trendy art scene, world class dining and shopping, stunning temples and a deep cultural heritage all very much in evidence. You'll explore the city by ‘sky train’, tuk-tuk, traditional longtail boat, river taxi, and - importantly! - with your tastebuds. Day three is entirely at leisure.

Day 1 - Arrive Bangkok, evening tour

On arrival in Thailand, you'll be met by your private guide, who will accompany you to your hotel.

Welcome to Selective Asia! This level of personal service (such as private transfers, private tours etc) is what you can expect throughout your trip. A few services (eg boat cruises) will be shared, but we'll always make sure you're aware of these.

Late afternoon your guide will meet you for an evening tour of Bangkok’s glittering temples and heritage area. Climb aboard Bangkok’s efficient sky train system towards Krung Thonburi. From here you'll take a tuk-tuk to Lhong 1919, a collection of old riverside warehouses transformed into a trendy outdoor venue of chic eateries and galleries which showcase the work of local artists. Enjoy a dinner of contemporary Thai cuisine before continuing your evening in the tuk-tuk, stopping to view Wat Arun, also known as the ‘Temple of Dawn’, and Wat Pho (home of a famous 45 metre long reclining Buddha), both of which are beautifully lit up at night. Final stop is the Prime Hotel, which boasts enviable city views from its rooftop bar. Relax with a cocktail or two and soak up the night-time views over Bangkok, before returning to your hotel.

Day 2 - City Safari

Step into the flow today on a tour of highlights, some well known, others further off the track. The city is kept in perpetual motion by a buzzing public network whose modes of transport span from ancient to ultramodern, and your transportation today will include a traditional longtail boat, the sky train, and the ubiquitous and exciting tuk-tuk - a combination that ensures you get to explore areas of the city that most visitors don't see. You'll cover a lot of ground, but there's is no better way to truly experience the 'City of Angels'. Start at the wonderful Lumpini Park where locals practice Tai Chi in the morning, before a proper exploration of Wat Pho. Visit one of the oldest traditional Thai massage schools in the country, a handicraft community known for the unique art of making monk’s alms bowls, the historic house of Jim Thompson, a mysterious American silk merchant, and the cutting-edge Siam Square. One key highlight is the Grand Palace, where you can see some of the buildings used for different occasions, including the Funeral Palace, Reception Palace, Throne Hall, Coronation Hall, Royal Guest House, and the Emerald Buddha, the most revered Buddha image in Thailand.

Day 3 - Relax & explore

Your day will be at leisure to relax or continue your exploration of Bangkok.

Chiang Mai - 2 nights

Chiang Mai – Thailand's ‘Rose of the North’ – has a laid-back ambience and pleasant climate, a fine selection of restaurants (many consider Thailand’s northern cuisine to be the best in the country) and a high number of temples & sites of cultural significance. The city is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding valleys and hill tribe regions beyond, and the Sunday market in the city centre offers a more authentic experience and wider array of hill tribe goods than the tourist trinkets more commonly associated with the nightly market in the same area.

Day 4 - Fly to Chiang Mai, Temple tour, Dinner at Oxygen restaurant

Take a morning flight to Chiang Mai where you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. There are an incredible number of ‘wats’ in Chiang Mai – seemingly one on every street. You’ve only got a day – which ones do you visit? Step in your Selective Asia guide who will introduce you to the city’s culture and history on an afternoon tour of the old town. In addition to significant temples you’ll visit the city’s silver making district and observe silversmiths at work. Return to your hotel where there will be time to freshen up before heading out for a set Thai dinner at Oxygen Dining Room – one of the best restaurants in Chiang Mai.

Day 5 - Wat Phra Thad Doi Suthep, monk blessing at Wat Umong

Set off at first light, arriving in time to witness the saffron-robed monks emerge from their monasteries at Wat Phra Thad Doi Suthep, the most important temple in Northern Thailand. They walk silently down the streets, collecting alms from local Buddhist residents - a serene ceremony which is the perfect introduction to Chiang Mai’s spiritual side. Climb past the Golden Nagas lining the staircase to the temple cloister, where you can view one of Thailand's most sacred stupas, and enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the city below. Continue your spiritual journey at unique Wat Umong, also known as the ‘Tunnel Temple’. Hidden amongst the trees at the foot of Doi Suthep, its network of underground tunnels and caves dates back to the 14th century. In one of these quiet corners, you can receive a special blessing from a local monk. Feeling sufficiently soulful, head to a popular local restaurant for a hearty bowl of khao soi, Chiang Mai’s most famous dish. The rest of your day will be at leisure.

Golden Triangle - 3 nights

Thailand's fabled Golden Triangle is a region of immense natural beauty, and home to many hilltribe communities and ancient temples. One of our favourite places to stay here is the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort, set in a huge estate on the banks of the Rauk River. Boasting superb panoramas of Myanmar and Laos, the resort offers unique activities which combine perfectly with the high standard of luxury we've come to expect from an Anantara property. Your stay here is arranged on a package basis, meaning that not only are all your meals included, but you’ll also be able to make the most of the resort's extensive facilities, in particular its unique elephant camp. The options are as varied as they are engaging, ensuring something to suit every guest, and you can select one activity or treatment a day from a range of elephant camp activities, cooking classes, spa treatments and excursions in to the Golden Triangle. Your entire stay here is at leisure to spend as you choose.

Day 6 - Drive to the Golden Triangle

Morning departure in a northerly direction to the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort. The remainder of your day will be at leisure to relax, get involved in the resort's activity programme and meet the resident elephants.

Days 7 & 8 - Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort

Indulge in a spa treatment, try your hand at cooking Thai cuisine, get up close to the resident elephants, or simply relax...the choice is yours!

Krabi - 4 nights

With more than its fair share of world class beaches, great diving, a unique local cuisine and a variety of adventure sports, it’s easy to understand why Krabi is amongst Thailand’s most popular beach resorts. The most distinguishing feature of both Krabi and neighbouring Phang Nga are the huge, unworldly limestone karsts which rise up out of the sea. Your time here will be spent almost entirely at leisure, relaxing in this superb tropical landscape, with a day of guided kayaking and island hopping on your private speedboat, in the scenically beautiful Than Bokkharani National Park.

Day 9 - Fly to Krabi

Take a flight from Chiang Rai to Krabi (via Bangkok) where, on arrival, you will be driven to your hotel. The remainder of your day will be at leisure.

Day 10 - Relax on the beach

Your day will be at leisure to relax and dig your toes in the sand.

Day 11 - Hong Island speedboat & kayak

Enjoy a relaxing day exploring Than Bokkharani National Park, an idyllic area dotted with rocky limestone outcrops, hidden caves, soft sandy beaches and jungle-clad uninhabited islands. Board your private speedboat to visit some of the islands, spending most of the day on Koh Hong - one of the largest. Swap your speedboat for a kayak, embarking on a guided paddle around the island’s towering limestone karsts and the island's hidden lagoon, accessible through a narrow passage and surrounded by imposing limestone cliffs. After time on the beach, speed off to other smaller islands in the area, where you'll have the opportunity to snorkel and swim before a picnic on one of the beautiful stretches of sand. Take the speedboat back to Krabi, where the rest of your day will be at leisure.

Day 12 - R&R time

Enjoy another day of R&R on Krabi's idyllic sands.

Day 13 - Depart Krabi

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
