Stay in a haveli in India
Experience the graceful generosity of Indian hospitality by staying in a haveli - a traditional family-run townhouse or farmhouse where you can enjoy dinner with your hosts, receive cookery instruction from senior family members, and relax against a backdrop of historic architecture or stunning landscape.
What to expect when you stay in a haveli...
Havelis are traditional Indian mansions, and can be situated in town or in the countryside, and they range from highly luxurious to a rather more faded level of historic grandeur! They typically focus on a courtyard or ‘chowk’, where a lot of family life takes place, from preparing and cooking food to daily worship and catching up on family business.
A number of havelis now welcome visitors who seek an authentic taste of what traditional Indian life is like for a well-off family. Your stay will typically focus on food, with the opportunity to taste expert family cooking, learn how to use spices to their best advantage, and receive unparalleled wisdom on how to put together the perfect curry.
Other activities are also on offer, and range from yoga and ayurvedic medicine to kite-flying and milking the resident cows! If you’re staying on a farm, there may well be opportunities for walks and nature-spotting in the surrounding countryside, and swimming in nearby rivers and pools.
Guest rooms vary from simply charming to grandiose, and you will always be made to feel right at home. Stay length can be as long as you wish, although in some of the more remote rural locations, we advocate at least two nights because the journey isn’t worthwhile for shorter stays.
