Rural family life at Thailand's Khum Lanna
Hill trekking experiences are commonplace in Northern Thailand, but Khum Lanna stands out from the crowd. Surrounded by rice paddy fields, equidistant between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, this quaint lodge is more than a comfortable trekking base. More akin to a country retreat, it brings the northern region to life through excellent cooking classes, tribal village visits and scenic cycle rides.
What to expect at Khum Lanna...
Khum Lanna offers the opportunity to experience northern Thai hilltribe life the way it really is, in a remote and rural setting, with no wi-fi or television to distract! The accommodation itself is charming: you’ll be staying in a spacious en-suite room in one of two traditional teak houses. However, it’s the authentic experiences and activities on offer that are the real draw.
Such is the reputation of Khum Lanna’s cooking school, that people travel out to the lodge from the city just for the day. You’ll be taught how to prepare authentic Northern Thai dishes, with most of the ingredients coming from the lodge’s organic gardens.
Still on the food theme, Khum Lanna’s ‘Rice for Life’ concept means you also leave with a comprehensive understanding of rice (did you know there are multiple types? ) and its major importance to Thai life. With a renowned in-house cooking school, you’re guaranteed delicious home-cooked meals during your stay. The pork & sweet basil is particularly delicious.
Exploring the scenic countryside by foot or on two wheels, will be the other main focus for your daily activities (good news if you’ve over-indulged on the dining front!). It’s a pleasant, easy cycle through the surrounding paddy fields to nearby villages.
You will also visit a few nearby markets and temples as well as the local town, giving a broad understanding of Thai life away from the tourist industry. The sunrise cycle to a local market is worth getting up early for and you’ll have time on your cycle back to give offerings at a small Buddhist temple.
If you prefer to explore by foot, trek into the surrounding foothills; or, for the more adventurous challenging hikes can be made to Akha Outpost, where simple overnight accommodation is available. After all that activity relax back at Khum Lanna where a herbal steam bath or therapeutic hot-pressed herbal massage is the order of the day!
