What to expect from our Halong Bay junks...
Although you aren’t allowed to just sail off anywhere you fancy, chartering a private junk does give you far more control over your route than on a shared cruise. Smaller vessels mean shallower drafts - that is, they can access bays and waterways that larger ships cannot. Crucially, they also bring the considerable benefit of total privacy for you and your loved one (or ones - there are also junks to share with small groups).
Halong’s 2,000 craggy limestone islands are covered in dense vegetation and scattered across 600 square miles of tranquil blue. They’re mostly uninhabited, except by monkeys, lizards and the occasional, oh so exotic chicken, and are ideal for a decadent private cruise; your junk can stop off at floating villages, sandy beaches for picnics, and little coves that are perfect for swimming, snorkelling or canoeing.
Some of the islands have grand limestone caves, full of stalactites and stalagmites, hidden within them, and the people of Halong typically live in floating houses, around which they fish and cultivate molluscs.
Your crew are trained to be discreet as well as expert sailors, and one will also be a great chef who will prepare meals to your specifications, to be enjoyed on deck or in a private dining area overlooking the water.
