What to expect on a Myanmar balloon flight...

Wherever you are, a hot air balloon flight offers an unparalled perspective on the world, but in a country like Myanmar it’s extra special, as the region is blessed with genuinely stunning scenery and evocative architecture. A slow flight through the atmosphere - with only the birds and the odd cloud for company - is one of the most tranquil ways to travel imaginable.

Flights are designed with intimacy in mind - to ensure a personal experience, the baskets hold just a few people at a time - and tours are available from various locations across Myanmar’s central region. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bagan is probably the best known, and is unequivocally superb, since the flight takes you over hundreds of temples and stupas whose mandala layouts are especially impressive from the air.

But each area offers something unique to see from your basket, and balloon flights are available over the lush and colourful fields and farms of Pindaya, the stilt-villages and floating vegetable gardens of Lake Inle, or even the ever-expanding cityscapes of Mandalay. Look carefully as you float low over villages and you’ll see local people going about their daily lives, flocking to the morning markets, possibly waving their greetings as you float overhead.

If the prospect of heading skyward feels a little daunting, be assured that you’re in safe hands with Oriental Ballooning. All of their pilots hold UK commercial licenses, and are extremely professional and hugely knowledgeable about the local area. A dedicated ground crew will be on hand to ensure everything goes smoothly, picking you up from and returning you to your hotel, providing a light pre-flight breakfast, and welcoming you back down to earth with the traditional post-flight glass of bubbly.
