Once you’ve had your fill of the splendid Angkor temples, explore more of Siem Reap’s vibrant culture with a unique dining experience at Villa Chandara. The tranquillity is arresting; as your senses become accustomed to your surroundings, scents of wild flowers and warm spices fill the air, tempting you through the rice paddies towards the villa. On arrival you are greeted with a cool glass of fizz, as you embark upon an evening bursting with exquisite flavours…
What to expect at Villa Chandara...
Villa Chandara, just a short distance from central Siem Reap, is a secluded oasis where a lucky few can celebrate the food, music and traditions of Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage.
As the afternoon shadows begin to lengthen, your guide meets you at your hotel and leads you by road, boat and on foot through scenes of rural beauty, reaching Villa Chandara just in time for sundowners.
Everyday Cambodian country life, from farm workers returning home at the end of the day to children playing in the fields, continues around you as you make your journey, bringing the tranquil landscape to life. The villa is full of romance; it’s an ideal spot for honeymooners.
The main house is modern but built in traditional style, with wide verandas surrounded by lightly cultivated gardens. Hosting only a handful of guests at a time, the experience can be finely tailored to suit you. Mingle with the other diners as you enjoy a selection of drinks and cocktails (including the house speciality lychee martini), or seek out some privacy at one of the carefully arranged seating areas dotted throughout the grounds. Traditional Khmer music, played by local musicians, floats to you on the air as night draws in.
The dusky landscape is illuminated by hundreds of tiny lights marking out a path to your private table. Dinner is a five course banquet of 11 traditional Khmer dishes, expertly prepared and given a modern lift by experienced chefs.
The menu varies to make the most of the season’s best ingredients – there may be comforting Amok curry, salads with fresh herbs, or spicy soups, each dish cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. Full of the scents, spices and sounds of rural Cambodia, the soiree draws to a close.
As you return to your hotel through the darkness, you can look back and see the lights of the villa still twinkling; an enchanting image to end the evening.
