Camp by Lake Lak in Vietnam's Central Highlands
This leisurely exploration of rural village life in Vietnam will take you to the M'Nong villages around Lake Lak, a vast but tranquil stretch of water in Vietnam's central highlands. Discover the traditional culture that thrives here, and explore the lake by boat, watching fishermen cast their nets as the glassy surface reflects the picturesque rural scenery. On the two night version, you'll explore Chu Yang Sin National Park, where you can swim in natural pools, and you'll spend every night of the experience at the superb Lak Tented Camp, in a luxury safari lodge overlooking the lake.
What to expect at Lak Tented Camp...
The Lak Tented Camp is perched on the bank of picturesque Lak Lak, a scenic area which has long been home to the ethnically distinct M'Nong people, and was once the summer retreat of Vietnam's final emperor.
A stay here includes half a day being expertly guided around all three of the M'Nong communities that are situated around the lake, with further time to roam as you please, stopping to say hi to the villagers and soaking up the unique atmosphere of life in this beautiful landscape.
In the evening, you'll be treated to a traditional gong performance before dinner at Y Lak, the fabulous al fresco restaurant at the camp, where you can dine on an array of mouthwatering dishes prepared from seasonal local produce, including herbs and vegetables from the onsite organic garden.
After dinner, perhaps enjoy a spot of stargazing (the area is blissfully free from light pollution) and drift off in your 'tent', which is more of a canvas safari lodge, pitched on a raised wooden platform and furnished to perfection with a double bed and stylish accessories.
You'll spend one or two nights at the camp, rising early on one day for a boat trip on the lake to see the fishermen at work as the sun rises, and the villages waking up for breakfast along the waterside.
If you stay for two nights, you'll have the opportunity to visit an outlying village on the edge of the stunning Chu Yang Sin National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty where you can take a short trek into the evergreen forest to see an impressive waterfall, bathe in the natural pools around it, and enjoy a picnic lunch by the water.
There's a keen focus on delicious food at the camp, too, with a cookery demonstration on offer, along with the chance to learn more about the camp's farm and local growing techniques.
