Cambodian village explorer

Few visitors to Cambodia witness rural Khmer life in such detail, let alone enjoy this level of one-to-one time with a Cambodian family in their own home. Our unique 'village explorer' trip not only shows you a different way of life, but slows you to another, older pace, as you travel by oxcart through the rice fields and a number of traditional villages, visiting a local market and sharing lunch with a friendly family.

What to expect on the village explorer experience...

This is a wonderfully convenient day trip out of Siem Reap, and as Ed says, ‘although you’re only a short distance from town, you feel like you’ve travelled much further - and also back in time!’. We love how genuine and un-touristy it feels to sway along the dusty tracks in your ox-cart, gazing out over the rice fields and meeting villagers whose rattan-weaving and other craft techniques have been handed down over centuries.

Start by driving from Siem Reap to the village of Krabei Real, where you’ll sniff around the local market to choose produce and ingredients for lunch, which will be prepared by the family you’ll meet shortly.

Having bought some groceries, head off through the fields by traditional ox-cart, still widely used throughout rural Cambodia and boasting naturally low emissions, along with a very tranquil journey indeed.

In the villages you’ll meet craftspeople whose inherited skills keep the neighbourhood in useful household items, with any surplus stock sold in nearby markets.

One household will be your hosts for lunch, with your market shopping used to prepare several traditional Khmer dishes. You’ll be very welcome to join in for an impromptu cooking lesson if you like, with your guide acting as translator throughout.

After lunch, saunter around the village and meet more locals before driving back to Siem Reap, stopping if you wish at the famous Artisans d’Angkor craft workshops and Siem Reap’s own market, before being left to your own devices to find your evening meal in the lively town.
