Borneo Rainforest Lodge & Danum Valley
Borneo Rainforest Lodge is set deep in the heart of Danum Valley, a large rainforest conservation area two hours drive from Lahad Datu in Sabah's south east. Here you’ll have the privilege of experiencing something very few people ever will – immersion in one of Borneo's pristine rainforests, 130 million years old and with a staggering 200 plant species per hectare.
What to expect at the Rainforest Lodge...
During your stay at the luxurious Borneo Rainforest Lodge, you'll spend time looking out for beautiful orang-utan, rare Bornean pygmy elephants and Sumatran rhino, with opportunities to trek the sepulchral ‘Coffin Trail’, and take a dip in one of the forest’s natural pools and waterfalls.
A highlight of the Danum Valley experience is the tree top canopy walkway – one of the most spectacular in Sabah and standing at 26m at its highest point. The 300m long walkway features observation platforms at each suspension point, giving you the opportunity to rest and enjoy superb views into and across the forest canopy.
Another breath-taking view of the rainforest can be found on the ‘Coffin Trail, a 3km round trip leading to a 200 year old burial site, created by Sabah's indigenous tribes, and boasts a climb to a vantagepoint that looks out over miles and miles of rainforest. Standing on the edge looking out over the treetops is one of those special moments that leaves you feeling both humbled by the hugeness of it all, and inspired to discover more.
For a different perspective, join a night drive or walk after a locally-sourced dinner in the lodge’s restaurant. The rainforest certainly never sleeps, and an excursion after dark allows you to spot the jungle’s nocturnal inhabitants, including civet cats, flying squirrels, tree frogs and samba deer. Travellers with a spirit of adventure might also enjoy an alternative view of the forest from the water - pending a few hours on the Danum River is an excellent way to penetrate the jungle without disturbing its wildlife.
If you’re thinking that such a remote location must necessitate basic facilities, then think again - the Rainforest Lodge is famous for its surprising level of luxury; spacious chalets nestled harmoniously in the jungle habitat, natural polished wood, with subtle and stylish furnishings.
Three new premium villas have just opened on the property, which is easily our most popular lodge in Borneo, with constantly outstanding feedback. Opt for deluxe river view accommodation and you'll be contemplating the water and watching Borneo's world-renowned wildlife from the outdoor tub on your private balcony.
Selective Asia's Borneo expert Simon recommends a pre-breakfast canopy walk: 'It’s a fascinating opportunity to enjoy a bird’s eye view of the rainforest, its nocturnal residents making way for a myriad diurnal creatures, noisily asserting themselves as the sun rises.'
