Big Game Camping experience in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s wildlife is world class, with its extensive National Parks protecting big mammals like elephants, leopards and sloth bears, along with hundreds of smaller species. With such diversity, there are many excellent opportunities for safari, and our Big Game Camping experience puts you right in the middle of the action, whether you want to stalk leopards in Yala or Wilpattu or witness wild elephants in Uda Walawe.
What to expect at your Big Game Camp...
You’ll be camping at a private location on the border of one of three of Sri Lanka’s many National Parks, which protect diverse and often unique habitats that range from arid scrubland to verdant forest.
Yala, in the south east, is the island’s second largest NP, and home to Sri Lankan elephant, one of the world’s densest leopard populations, sloth bears, macaques, lorises, civets, water buffalo, and an astonishing array of birdlife.
Uda Walawe is a crucial elephant habitat - so much so that elephant sightings are guaranteed on every safari - and is famous for its Elephant Transit Home, which raises and releases abandoned elephant calves. The park is also good for leopards, deer, birds and a nice selection of small furry tree creatures.
Wilpattu, defined by its unique natural water features, is a world-renowned Sri Lankan leopard habitat.
Your camp will be rustic - no luggage racks or carpets in these safari tents - but fully equipped with beds, mosquito nets, torches, proper loos, sinks, and plenty of seating and hammocks for when it’s time to relax around the campfire and gaze up, unhindered by light pollution, at the extraordinary night sky above, listening to the sounds of wildlife around you.
Each camp has its own unique setting - a small forest reserve in Yala, a waterside clearing in Uda Walawe, and a lakeside forest in Wilpattu.
One of the reasons we love this experience is its versatility - it’s excellent as an economic alternative to the more lavish safari packages available, because you can use it as a base, and add on any number of game drives, private dining experiences and other extras - or not - depending on your budget.
We can adapt it to suit your needs and interests, whether you’re travelling as a family, creating an ideal honeymoon experience, looking for photo opportunities, keen to see a specific species, or simply ready to enjoy whatever wildlife deigns to saunter, prowl, scamper, slither or fly across your path.
On a game drive, you’ll head off into your National Park early in the morning, with a tracker provided by Sri Lanka’s Department of Wildlife. Your chosen National Park will be a brief drive from camp, although these journeys can themselves become mini-safaris in their own right - all our drivers and naturalists have expert knowledge of the local fauna and flora, so it pays to dawdle, looking out for wildlife en route.
Spend the rest of the day and evening relaxing at camp, where you may well spot further wildlife if you’re lucky - and quiet - enough. Special dinners and barbecues can be arranged, nighttime wilderness walks can be undertaken in some locations.

Important to note...
Although there will be some opportunity to charge photographic equipment (available on request) the electricity supply is limited, so make sure you bring plenty of batteries. Also note that mobile signals will be very weak here - ie no uploading to the cloud, so bring spare memory cards, too. Due to the remote nature of the camps, you must give advance notice of medical conditions and dietary requirements. Depending on your chosen safari package, binoculars may or may not be provided in your jeep - please check with us before packing. Breakfast and dinner are included; all other meals, all drinks and the game drives are extra.
