Chettinad | First Class
Built around a handsome old home that’s been in the same family for over 100 years, The Bangala in Karaikudi was the first heritage hotel in the Chettinad region of south-eastern India, and still leads the way when it comes to authentic food and charming, Chettiar hospitality.
A lounge, pretty gardens and wide verandahs with tiled floors and old-style furniture provide ample space to relax, while in the guest rooms, traditional pieces, patterned bedspreads and black and white photographs continue the heritage feel.
The food at The Bangala is exceptionally good and a glorious introduction to the flavours of Chettinad. Chefs in the family kitchen still use grinding stones to pulverize local spices and follow recipes handed down through generations, which typically rely on pepper, rather than chilli, for their heat and kick. Meals of multiple courses are taken in the teak-furnished dining hall, with many served simply on a banana leaf, to be eaten by hand. If you’re interested in learning more about this unique cuisine, the hotel runs cookery classes. Between meals, cool off in the outdoor pool, or make use of the library, gym and massage centre. Yoga is also available.
A charming heritage property that introduces guests to the delights of Chettiar cuisine and hospitality.
