Spice Village

Thekkady | First Class

This eco retreat uses local traditions to offer stylish and environmentally friendly accommodation, conveniently close to Periyar National Park, with its population of elephants.

The resort’s cottages are decked out in a style that the owners dub ‘spartan elegance’, which translates to plenty of natural light, white walls and smart upcycled pine furniture made from old wooden packing crates. The stone floors are covered with coir matting, and the white walls are decorated with local art. Bathrooms are spacious and clean, and each cottage has its own shady veranda with wicker chairs where you can sit amidst the leafy surroundings.

The cottages are thatched in a local style with elephant grass, which is unique to the region and would otherwise be burned. The material keeps the interior cool without the need for air conditioning, and makes use of local labour and traditions.

75% of the resort’s power comes from solar energy, and you might say that the environmental spirit is quite literally rooted in its organic garden! All of the ingredients used in the aptly named 50 Mile restaurant are sourced within a 50 mile radius of the resort. Dine on international dishes and Indian cuisine rich in local spices, and enjoy cocktails and mocktails in the chilled out bar.

There are plenty of activities on offer, from basketball and tennis courts, an open air swimming pool and even a paper-making centre. The Ayurveda spa offers a relaxing range of massages and therapies.
