Palani Hills | First Class
If you’re seeking a sense of history and a serious dose of peace and quiet, this small garden hotel in a converted 18th century palace, in the foothills of the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu, is for you.
Rajakkad Estate sits at about 1,000m above sea level on what was once the Rajakkad plantation, not far from the hill station of Kodaikanal. The extraordinary timber building at its heart, Pallam Palace, is intricately constructed from beams, panels and screens and inside this abundance of wood creates a dark, cocooning feel. Guests rooms, by contrast, have white walls and black floors and are decorated simply and comfortably. Contemporary furniture is teamed with embroideries, artworks and rugs gathered from all over India. Each room is reached via the main courtyard with its flowering trees, and has private access to the garden through a sliding door.
A small farm run on the estate provides the fresh ingredients for the predominantly Southern Indian food served here. Start the day with fresh juices, dosas, idli and tangy chutneys, as well as excellent coffee grown on nearby plantations. Breakfasts, lunches and afternoon tea can all be served in the garden or the cool of the palace.
Time spent here is about savouring nature, escaping the urban bustle and enjoying the thoughtful hospitality that this small hotel prides itself on. A yoga platform has been built on an escarpment in the grounds, surrounded by flowering trees, where guests can unroll a mat and practice. Explore the estate’s terraced garden, its farm and coffee drying yard, and wander into the village beyond, or simply soak up the birdsong in a hammock.
A small and unique historic property surrounded by beautiful gardens.
