Raas Chhatra Sagar

Chhatra Sagar | Deluxe

About two hours from Jodhpur, on the dam of a reservoir, RAAS Chhatrasagar stays true to the heritage of this corner of Rajasthan, where local nobles entertained guests in luxurious tented camps and savoured the unspoiled landscape, birdlife and big skies.

This boutique tented camp reopened in 2019 following a major redesign. There are 20 luxury tents, with four designed to suit families, and unlike the temporary camps erected here for parties by Thakur Chhatra Singh, the nobleman who built the dam in 1890, these modern incarnations are more solid. They are sound proofed and have air conditioning and heating, which means this is one of the few camps in India that stays open year-round. All tents overlook the lake in the east and have terraced ‘sit outs’ designed to provide deep shade, privacy and long views over a landscape with virtually no sign of habitation. The décor is understated luxury, with soft colours, locally woven fabrics, Jodhpur stone, teak furniture and sky lights.

The camp’s organic garden keeps the head chef well supplied with fresh ingredients. Enjoy Indian and international food, with curries and Rajasthani specialities made using old family recipes, alongside Italian classics and barbecues. The restaurant is open all day, and sits in a glorious location right next to Lake Chattra Sagar. Food is available by the pool, too, or you can dine in your tent. The bar within the restaurant does a great line in herbal infused alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails.

Private yoga sessions, a spa offering Ayurvedic treatments and a heated pool are superb new additions to this sensitively redesigned camp, but the emphasis on enjoying and respecting the unspoiled landscape remains, and a bird watching tour or visit to the local village is included in your stay. The camp has many environmentally friendly features, too. You won’t find plastic anywhere, waste water is recycled for the garden and all staff are local.

We Say

A sensitively redesigned camp on the shores of a reservoir, surrounded by birdlife and beauty.
