Pondicherry | First Class
Located in the fascinating Tamil quarter of Pondicherry, Maison Perumal is a 130-year-old family mansion, lovingly renovated to offer boutique accommodation to a handful of guests.
The building’s beautiful architecture reflects the city’s rare mix of French and Tamil cultures and inside, the white walls of its communal areas act as gallery space for the work of local artists, whose work hangs alongside photographs of the house’s founding family.
Guest rooms are accessed from the balconies, decorated with stained glass, that overlook the central, teak-columned courtyard. They are simply designed with local materials, such as cool Cuduppah stone on the floor, and period teak furniture similar to the simple, elegant style found in prosperous Tamil houses of the last century. Bright cushions and curtains inject fresh colour, and all rooms have air conditioning.
Locally grown produce is at the heart of the tasty Tamil-French cuisine served in the Maison’s beautiful courtyard dining room, where tables are dotted between lush palms, or on the covered verandah. Delicious set dinners made up of many courses feature soups, chutneys, fish, rice and curries, while breakfast is a French and Tamil mix, with fruit, omelettes, croissants and fresh baguettes served alongside South Indian dosas and uttapams. Cooking demonstrations are run here, so you can recreate Southern India at your table back home. There’s also a cool bar, decorated with Indian film posters.
A converted Tamil mansion in former Pondicherry, this petite hotel is drenched in history, atmosphere and charm.
