Tashi Choeta Hotel
Shigatse | First Class
The Tashi Choeta is a fairly large, traditional hotel in central Shigatse, overlooked by rugged hills on one side and the Tashilhunpo monastery on the other. With a classic décor and comfortable, contemporary facilities, it makes a convenient base for exploring this remote yet dynamic city en route to Mt. Everest.
The interiors are simple and unfussy, combining typical Tibetan design with mid -20th century Western influences. Carved woods and bright silks contrast with chintz textiles, fringed lamps and gathered curtains, giving each space a busy but homely feel. Ranging from cosy twins to spacious doubles, there is a good choice of guestrooms to suit different requirements. Some larger rooms incorporate seating areas complete with high-backed armchairs, providing additional space to relax in private. The en-suites are bright and modern, with enclosed showers and wet-room tiling.
A simple range of traditional Tibetan and contemporary international dishes are served at the in-house restaurant, making it a good stop for a quick pre-sightseeing breakfast. Though fairly basic compared to big city standards, and with a no-frills approach, this hotel has convenience on its side, and includes a few distinctive details like a modest garden area and a decorative model of Potala Palace in the lobby. Wander out to explore the markets and monastery, before returning to watch the sunset over the hills from the roof terrace or relax with a nightcap in the lounge.
