Sol Beach Resort
Koh Rong Samloem | First Class
Calm clear water, white sand beaches and an easy-going vibe succinctly sums up the tropical island of Koh Rong Samloem, a 45-minute fast ferry from Sihanoukville. Measuring 9km long, by 5km at its widest point, there’s little to do besides snorkelling and diving, fishing and relaxing. Tourist development is minimal and the hotel choice at present is limited (that’s a good thing!) adding to the island’s serenity.
Boasting a beachfront setting on Saracen Bay, a head-turning 3km long beach on the sunrise side of the island, Sol Beach Resort opened at the end of 2015 and comprises of 15 individual wooden villas. Aptly named Ocean Front villas are just steps from the ocean and enjoy uninterrupted views through floor to ceiling windows. The Tree villas are set in a row behind: built on stilts they overlook the front row villas and feature a second sleeping area in the loft. And the Family villas, which have ample space for up to six people, are located in the back row.
The open-air restaurant serves a variety of food, from fresh fish, pasta and salads to Khmer cuisine. Alternatively order dinner at the bar, have it delivered to your villa and dine al-fresco on the balcony. If you feel the need to be active, it’s a pleasant one kilometre walk through the island’s jungle interior to the sunset side. Otherwise, choose a hammock, pick up your book and unwind.
