Travel to Japan in Winter 2025/26 with Selective Asia, and book before the end of April ‘25 to ensure the widest choice and best availability.
Visiting Japan in winter is a surefire way to see the country in a brilliant light, with fewer crowds in the top spots, the best seasonal seafood, and (if you time your booking right) a wide choice of accommodation and experiences at excellent value. But perhaps the best reason to visit Japan in Winter is that, in many ways, it’s business as usual. Enjoy the neon intensity of Tokyo, find the finest foodie treats in Osaka, and experience traditional Japanese culture from Kyoto to Kanazawa, but with lower footfall. Pack your big coat for chilly or rainy days, but rest assured that rain and snow won’t stop play - those shinkansen run on time in all weathers.
From the beginning of December, those clear, blue-sky winter skies that signal biting cold days begin to take hold, and there’s plenty of pre-Chrismas sparkle to make you feel festive. January is the optimal time to catch Japan in the snow, enjoy plenty of onsen soaks and warm sake, and even try out a little skiing, if that’s your thing. You’ll find plenty of crisp, sunny days, interspersed with rainy ones, and even snow, right through to the end of February, when winter starts gives way to spring and hanami, or cherry blossom season. Whilst visiting Japan during hanami has become extremely busy, visiting Japan in late February can give you an early glimpse of those beautiful pink-and-white blooms with far fewer crowds to contend with.
