Ryokan Asunaro
Takayama | Ryokan
Centrally located in downtown Takayama, within 10 minutes’ walk of the train station and a short stroll from the Sanmachi Suji quarter, the Ryokan Asunaro follows the traditional Japanese inn style, with considered modern touches.
The 200-year old main building is actually an old samurai house that was carefully transported from a village in the mountainous northern region of Japan. Constructed from old oak trees, with weighty roof beams, polished wooden floors and a traditional sunken hearth centrepiece, it has the cosy air of a Scandinavian ski lodge.
Behind this ancient structure, the guest rooms are housed in a more modern annexe. Although traditional in style and décor; floors are tatami-covered, bedding is a futon on the floor and intricate calligraphy decorates the sliding doors; they additionally benefit from modern amenities such as a TV and heating (quite unusual in a ryokan). The majority of the rooms have a private bathroom; for those that don’t there is a shared granite-heated onsen as well as a private shower room (for the more prudish!)
In keeping with a traditional ryokan, the cuisine served is a feast of locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Don’t leave without tasting the Hida beef – the regions’ answer to Wagyu.
We Say
We particularly like the rooms that feature their own ‘irori’ – a traditional Japanese sunken fireplace.Facilities
