Miyajima | Ryokan
Set in picturesque, serene forest close to the coast on Miyajima island, the Iwaso Ryokan provides an authentic Japanese experience with luxurious touches. There has been a ryokan on this site for over 160 years, and many of the buildings date back to the early 1900's giving the hotel a wonderful sense of history. It is only a 5 minute walk from the hotel to the Itsukushima Shrine and the surrounding Momijidani Park, the jewels in the crown of this World Heritage site.
The single-storey wooden ‘Hanare’ cottages offer tranquillity and tradition, blending beautifully into the forest surroundings. Each room is tastefully decorated in calming, neutral shades to contrast with the dark wood furnishings, and many have stunning panoramic forest views. Tatami flooring, latticework screens and futon beds complete the feel of authentic Japanese elegance.
A room in the newer five storey building combines the elements of old-fashioned style with up-to date convenience. The views across the Momijidani valley are breath-taking and, unlike the cottages, each room has private bathroom facilities. For true relaxation, however, the shared onsen spa baths are hard to beat. Renowned for their soothing mineral properties, they are the perfect place to soak away stress.
By all accounts, the cuisine is truly something to write home about. Whether you dine in the main restaurant or choose to have private service in your room, you will be presented with a mouth-watering selection of exquisite dishes, created from locally-sourced ingredients, in the multi-course Kaiseki banquet style.
