Tsumago | First Class
Surrounded by nothing but mountains and forest, on a hillside 20-minutes outside Tsumago, Hotel Fukinomori’s secluded location is conducive to relaxation: the perfect spot for some down time in a busy sightseeing schedule.
After a full day trekking the Nakasendo Way from Magome there’s nothing better than a soothing soak in the hotel’s outdoor hot springs: taking in the panoramic views; breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the sound of silence. During the winter, the snow covered mountains are an impressive vista - an afternoon of sledding is great fun - but the indoor onsen may be preferable for a warming soak. Large windows offer views of the forested landscape and as the bathtub is constructed from local cypress wood, the warm waters generate a subtle wooded fragrance, bringing the outdoors in.
The hotel has been seemingly designed to maximise its enviable natural setting. The second floor lounge boasts floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views and some great star spotting at night and every guest room features large windows and a private balcony. Rooms are traditional Japanese style, but unlike many of the ryokans found in Tsumago, all have full en-suite facilities. The standard rooms are quite compact, but there are two ‘special’ rooms that are almost double the size.
The only area of the property without views is the dining room, where the food is understandably the focus. Dinner comprises of food grown and produced in the Kiso region, such as the renowned local Kiso Beef and hand kneaded soba (noodles) made from buckwheat from the nearby Kaida Highland.
We SayThe star of the show at this Japanese hotel is its natural hot spring baths.
