Abai Jungle Lodge
Kinabatangan River (Abai) | First Class
The Abai Jungle Lodge is, rather pleasingly, only accessible by boat. It’s an excellent, well-renowned location for wildlife-spotting - truly quiet, unless you count the rainforest sounds, and far from any other accommodation, with creatures getting remarkably close to the lodge itself.
The rooms are basic but comfortable, with a ceiling fan (only six of the rooms have air-con), netted windows, and a private bathroom with a hot shower. Walls and floor are made of polished wood, with a white-painted ceiling to keep things bright and airy. The open-air restaurant hires local people and serves produce harvested nearby, such as freshwater prawns, fish, and locally grown vegetables.
800 metre long wooden walkways extend out from the lodge into the surrounding rainforest, enabling easy exploration at any time and jungle viewing from seated platforms. Silvered langur, maroon langur, Hose's langur, orang-utan and all kinds of birds are spotted here frequently, with guests also photographing a clouded leopard & a sun bear in recent years.
We SayThe perfect choice for visitors with just one night in the Kinabatangan region, or for those wishing to split their time between two lodges.
