Vietnam and Cambodia are lands of contrast and continuity, where cities pulse with life, and river deltas remain timeless, where temples stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history, and rural communities live in harmony with the land. This three week itinerary stitches together the most iconic highlights with a series of immersive experiences that take you deeper into the heart of these two amazing destinations.

Designed with flexibility in mind, this route flows naturally from north to south then into Cambodia via the Mekong delta, but could just as easily be done in reverse if you wish. City buzz & coastal breeze

Begin your time in Vietnam in the buzzing city of Hanoi, where scooters whip through the streets past old French colonial facades. Explore the Old Quarter, from the solemnity of Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum to the iconic Railway Street, where trains rattle past inches from cafe dwellers. Evenings bring their own flavour, dive into Hanoi’s street food where fresh noodles and crispy pancakes are waiting to be devoured or catch some live music in a tucked-away bar.

A few hours’ drive east, Halong Bay’s limestone karsts rise dramatically from the still waters. Cruise between islets, discover hidden caves, and dine on freshly caught seafood as the sun dips behind the rocks as you explore Lan Ha Bay. You’ll stay on a traditional style boat with all the comfort of a boutique hotel and wake to the sound of the gentle waves lapping against the wood.

Historic cities

From Hanoi, you’ll fly south to Hue, the former imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty. Spend your time drifting peacefully along the Perfume River taking in the sights of the Imperial Citadel with its ornate pagodas, and intricate tombs hidden in the forested hills.

A scenic drive across the Hai Van Pass brings you to the colourful city of Hoi An. Once a bustling trading port, now a lively riverside town popular with tourists which is particularly enigmatic at night when it glows with lantern light. Here, you can wander through the maze of streets, sampling local delicacies like White Rose dumplings and fresh seafood, or learn to whip up some classic dishes in a cooking class. Beyond the old town, rice paddies and sandy beaches invite slow afternoons, while a visit to the ancient temples of My Son connects you to the region’s Cham heritage.

To the south

Flying into Ho Chi Minh City, you’re struck by its contrasts. Gleaming skyscrapers stand tall alongside French colonial landmarks and centuries-old pagodas. Explore Saigon’s layered history through its war-era memorials, bustling markets and cosmopolitan cafes, all coexisting side by side in this vibrant city. Visit the famous Cu Chi tunnels, a fascinating network of underground tunnels used by Vietnamese resistance fighters.

After some time exploring this sprawling city you’ll head out to the Mekong Delta, which offers a completely different rhythm. Stay on a comfortable wooden riverboat and glide through a world of floating markets, stilt houses, and coconut groves, learning about life in the delta. Onshore cycle through the delta's countryside, past rice fields, fruit trees and small villages before returning to your boat for delicious dishes under the stars.

Onwards to Cambodia

Continue your journey into Cambodia by speedboat along the Mekong River to Phnom Penh, a city steeped in turbulent history. Visit the impressive Royal Palace and National Museum before learning about the haunting past at Tuol Sleng and the Killing Fields. Although recent history has left its marks, there is a resilience to the Cambodian people and a sense of hope can be felt throughout this small country.

Journey onwards to Siem Reap, where the iconic Angkor Wat complex lies. Explore hidden corners of the complex, from jungle-entwined ruins to remote deserted temples. Outside the temples, you’ll find rural life in full swing with ox carts trundling along red dirt roads, lush rice paddies glistening in the sunshine, and monks offering blessings at tranquil monasteries.
