Staying at Ashburnham Estate (Ash to those in the know) feels a bit like visiting old friends, albeit friends who are lucky enough to live in a handsome 1930s Planters estate house with its own 100-acre tea estate!
Around an hour north-east of Kandy, Ashburnham’s colonial ambience, mountain vistas, tea plantations and waterfalls, make it a fantastic option for anyone, but particularly those who may not have the time or inclination to head for the more central areas of Sri Lanka’s Tea Country.
Each of the six bedrooms is totally unique, although all boast large four-poster beds. Their style is quite hard to describe, think quirky, charming and characterful. A little bit shabby chic, but with a modern twist. The spacious family room is ideal for small groups and this, along with the relaxed, friendly atmosphere, makes Ash a great option for those travelling with children.
Estate manger Mr Das is happy to welcome guests on guided tours of the tea fields, where everyone can join the tea pickers bringing in the days harvest; and resident naturalist Aravinda leads fascinating walks and treks around the local area. In the kitchen, the Kandayan Chef Reggie prepares superb curries, delicious western options, and of course the tasty scones and cakes served up every day for afternoon tea. He also offers his own unique style of cooking classes.
After days spent exploring the estate or relaxing on one of the many conveniently placed squashy sofas, sundowners on the terrace or by the roaring fire are a must. On a clear day views extend all the way to the Knuckles Mountain ranges, making this the perfect place to watch the sunset.
Please note that no alcohol is served at this hotel. However, you are welcome to take in your own alcoholic drinks.
We SayAsh have created a little private walks book which means guests can easily take themselves off on walks on and beyond the estate.
