Dwarika's Hotel

Kathmandu | Deluxe

Housed in an extraordinary building that showcases its founder’s passion for Nepali culture and craft, the Dwarika Hotel is an atmospheric sanctuary amid the temples and monuments of historic Kathmandu. Within high walls surrounding a serene courtyard, softened by the gentle greenery of abundant foliage, the carved window frames and pillars that Dwarika Das Shrestha collected over his lifetime are restored to their former glory, and replicated throughout the hotel, to preserve the cultural heritage and methods of traditional Newari architecture.

The luxury here is less about a polished aesthetic and more about attention to quality in the details. The suites are imbued with a sense of genuine care and dedication to the founders’ vision. Each room has its own character influenced by the differently-shaped spaces and individual design. From the tiled floors to the patinaed wooden furniture; the crisp, white walls against the contrasting bare brickwork, to the traditional Nepali patterns in the rugs; everything feels well-balanced and thoughtfully designed. Generous swathes of curtain frame those ornate window-frames, through which the clear Kathmandu light floods in. Bold colour and geometric patterns in the soft furnishings add a sense of modernity and freshness, while dark slate and gold details bring a grounded richness to the en-suites.

Onsite dining offers an array of cuisine and environment combinations from multi-course Nepali feasting (ranging from 6 to 22 courses!) served in a traditional setting, to delicate Japanese specialities with minimalist surroundings, to international dishes enjoyed al-fresco in the atmospheric courtyard. Diverse spa treatments, a fully-equipped fitness suite, indoor pool and complimentary yoga sessions – the full ‘bells and whistles’ as Ed described it! – complete the luxury package, and you can unwind at the end of a long day with a drink or two listening to live music in the chilled-out poolside bar.

We Say
‘High quality throughout, though more rustic luxury than ultra sleek finishes, with an interesting history and bags of character.’
