The Datai Langkawi

Langkawi

For as long as anyone can remember, the Datai has been at the top of the Asian luxury scene. It’s a testament to its single-minded design and delivery that it has remained committed to providing the best and has never taken a breather. The stylish buildings are only usurped by the sheer awesomeness of the exotic rainforest they’re plotted in. This cannot be overstated: the location is sublime and those photos are real.

As much as it is possible to imagine, the property blends with its surroundings. It’s so much a part of the rainforest that monkeys make no distinction and often patrol the area looking for a room to explore! There’s an eclectic choice of accommodation, from a 5-bedroom villa to more modest canopy rooms in the main building. All are good, but if budget allows then we recommend the sumptuous villa with its private pool and direct access to the beach.

Location

In a stunning position surrounded by dense jungle and overlooking a sheltered bay. However, it does mean you’re remote and should expect to eat and play here, as well as enjoying the R&R.

From a client…

We finally stayed at the Datai and I had to pinch myself that we were there. We ‘ve talked about it for years. It didn’t disappoint.

Why we love it

Discover what to expect from staying at The Datai Langkawi

Location, location, location…

This is a seriously good hotel in a cinematic location that combines prehistoric jungle with tropical waters lapping almost against the forest edge. It’s this wild setting, and the way the forest has enveloped the luxury property, that makes it something very special. Each time you walk to and from your villa, it's like a rainforest nature walk, with monkeys, hornbills and gorgeous giant black squirrels darting through the surrounding trees.

What can you do there?

A stay on Langkawi might come at the end of a Selective Asia itinerary after some adventures elsewhere in Malaysia or beyond, so days at leisure will probably come top of your list. However, if pure relaxation isn’t your idea of heaven, you won’t get bored. Non-motorised water sports are complimentary, so your snorkelling and sea kayaking are taken care of whenever you wish. The nature centre is a great place for families to learn the ecology around them, with naturalist-led nature walks through the grounds and onto the adventurous raised canopy walk.

Sustainability

As it would be reasonable to expect, the Datai has committed itself very heavily to its sustainable future. The “Datai Pledge” is an extensive and evolving programme dedicated to the environmental concerns of its immediate location and the whole island.

The expertise of the resident naturalist leads the team in how to take care of the sea and land, and this extends to the wider aspects the hotel has committed to, such as zero waste to landfill, no single use plastics, energy and water saving.
