Bon Ton Resort

Langkawi

Set within a century-old coconut plantation, the Bon Ton Resort is a quirky take on mid-range luxury. Eight beautiful, antique Malay houses have been re-assembled in the grounds, each totally unique from the others. The restaurant gets rave reviews, and some consider it to be one of the best on the island, with a lot of non-residents booking, so top class dining is right on your doorstep.

Rustic inside and out, with a combination of traditional Malay fabrics, antique furniture and carefully sourced decorative pieces, all rooms have outdoor decks overlooking the centrally-positioned infinity pool. It isn’t on the beach, although there is a free 5-minute shuttle bus to Cenang. However, as Langkawi’s busiest beach, it’s not the kind of secluded stretch we usually head for! With the peaceful gardens offering a relaxed place to unwind away from the crowds, we suggest finding yourself a shady spot onsite instead.

Location

Set within its own grounds, this tranquil hotel is just 10 minutes from the airport on the outskirts of Pantai Cenang beach, with many restaurants just a short taxi ride away.

Why we love it

Discover what to expect from staying at Bon Ton Resort

Quirky and full of character

This concept of reassembling antique local houses to serve as guest accommodation is a lovely one, and Bon Ton does it well. The pristine condition of the houses, the furnishings and the tropical foliage lend the resort a kind of Malaysian fairy tale setting. It could almost be the opening scene in a hypothetical Disney animation set in Langkawi!

We realise it won’t be for everyone, and it does come with its quirks (including the continental breakfast delivered to your house the night before to be put in the fridge!), but those idiosyncrasies give it a compelling quality that we can’t quite place.

What can you do there?

There’s not a huge array of amenities at the property, and combined with its non-beach location this is something to consider. However, if you like the idea of spending your time relaxing in your villa, in the gardens and by the pool (and if the ambience of the hotel appeals) then Bon Ton could be a great option.

Animal Rescue

Very nearby to the resort is the Lassie Animal shelter. Run by the same Australian owner as the hotel, it seeks to provide a home for local rescued dogs, cats and other domestic animals. Profits from the hotel are used to finance the project and it is common to find 4-legged residents enjoying the manicured grounds. Hotel residents are welcome to spend time interacting with the animals when they come to say hello!
