The Tea Factory

Nuwara Eliya | Superior

Deep in Sri Lanka's lush tea country, the spectacular Heritance Tea Factory is a converted - well, tea factory, perched atop a Kandy hillside since the 1930s. Nestled in lush organic tea plantations, the hotel cheerfully invites guests to pick their own tea - perfect for a souvenir.

It really is all about tea, here - there's even a tea themed menu in the restaurant - but don't be afraid, because they're very friendly and welcoming, and the location really is wonderful. Rooms range from premium to the splendid Flowerdew Suite - perhaps a good choice for honeymooners, this is apparently the highest room in Sri Lanka, at an elevation of 2km above sea level. Its views are subsequently brilliant, with windows on three sides - you wonder why they even included the massive 48 inch TV. All the rooms have nice views, however, with tasteful neutral decor and plenty of warm traditional touches.

The hotel's chefs showcase traditional Chena cuisine - regional food grown without chemical intervention, and prepared using local recipes and spices. The Kenmare Restaurant menu also serves Western specialties along with pan-Asian dishes, so there's a range of options, while the Railway Carriage restaurant epitomises fine dining - the chef takes your order, just to make sure he thoroughly understands your tastes.

We Say
If you don't like tea, best keep it to yourself - this is THE home of the sacred leaf!
