The Rainforest Eco Lodge

Sinharaja | Other

Along the treeline of an old tea plantation clearing near the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a scattering of sympathetically designed chalets marks out the Rainforest Eco Lodge. Combining a peaceful location with a commitment to preserving the ecological balance of the nearby UNESCO listed reserve, this resort is ideal for getting an immersive taste of rural life in the southern Sri Lankan jungle.

The chalet exteriors are unassuming; their static caravan-like frames (constructed from recycled shipping containers) skillfully designed to blend in with the forest. Inside, the space is remarkably comfortable and contemporary, and the well equipped en-suite bathrooms feel bright and spacious. The woven bamboo panelling and polished wooden floors seem to extend seamlessly from the hills and trees beyond, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling glass that brings the landscape inside. An open plan layout and crisp, contemporary lines continues the chic effect, while a palette of cream, cocoa, deep red and variegated green coordinates with the colours of the forest. Each chalet has a living area with a minibar fridge, desk and cosy seating, but the crowning glory is the private terrace with panoramic views over the valley, where you can sit and soak up the stillness.

A network of walkways links the chalets to the central building which houses the lounge, reading area and restaurant, all with excellent views over the tea plantation and rainforest. A wide range of dishes, prepared using locally-sourced fruit and vegetables as well as meat and fish brought in from Galle, can be enjoyed either in the main dining area or al-fresco on the terrace. Head out on guided treks to appreciate the area’s biodiversity, following nature trails and stopping frequently to do a spot of birdwatching. Immerse yourself in a refreshing natural pool in the rainforest, or just dip your feet in for a natural fish pedicure spa therapy, before returning to the resort to watch the sun set and maybe catch sight of a monkey or two making its way through the trees.
