April Overview
The high temperatures continue with April traditionally the hottest month of the year. Temperatures in Vientiane and Luang Prabang hover around 30°C whilst further to the south it is closer to 36 °C. Towards the end of the month showers become more likely as the wet season approaches although these tend to be infrequent and short lived.
Slash & Burn
During April and May you may witness the effects of 'slash and burn' farming, unfortunately practiced throughout much of Asia. New ground is cleared in February and, once dry, any wood and bush not required is burnt. Fires are lit across the country and particularly in rural regions this can create a hazy effect at times.
April 13-15 Bun Pi Mai (Laos New Year)
The Laos New Year is celebrated between 13th and 15th April when the country comes to a standstill with government offices, many markets and some tourist sites closing for the holiday. Seemingly the entire population of Laos takes to the streets and soaks each other with water …it’s all taken in very good spirit, even by the police and military. If you don’t want to get wet, stay inside or get out of the country – there is no alternative!
