January weather top tip

Laos enjoys arguably the best weather of the year this month. Arrive after the first few days of January to avoid high season surcharges at the hotels.

January Overview

The dry season continues during the month of January, promising premium travelling conditions throughout Laos and minimal rainfall expected across the country.

Average temperatures are a comfortable 24°C in Vientiane and Luang Prabang, whilst in Pakse and the southern regions it’s slightly warmer and highs of 30°C are not uncommon at this time. If you plan to travel to the higher altitude regions in the north and east of the country, or are stopping in Pakbeng on a cruise along the Mekong River, cooler temperatures (avg temp: 15°C) should be expected, especially at night. In Phongsali, for example, temperatures can dip to as low as 5°C and suitable warm clothing is recommended.

Essentially, sunny dry days and low rainfall make January an excellent time of year to visit Laos.
