The Raweekanlaya

Bangkok |

Whilst Bangkok embraces a new wave of high-rise buildings, we have been seeking out characterful, boutique hotels that offer a more intimate experience and serenity amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. The Raweekanlaya is exactly what we’ve been searching for...

Built in the late 1800's as the residence of the royal governess of His Majesty King Rama VI, this hidden gem enjoys a tranquility that belies its central location. The Chao Phraya River and Grand Palace are within easy walking distance, but the property is set within peaceful gardens that centre on an ancient banyan tree.

Having been carefully restored and tastefully extended, The Raweekanlaya houses 38 rooms which are split between the original residence, known as the Garden Wing, and the City Wing which faces towards the Krung Kasem canal. In keeping with its heritage, the rooms have been named with reference to ‘Mattanapata’ – an acclaimed play written by King Rama VI – and each room bears an inscription from Thai literature on the wall. Interior décor elegantly balances an Old-Siam ambiance with modern comforts.

As well as heritage, wellness and cuisine are an important focus at The Raweekanlaya. The in-house spa offers traditional Thai therapies, using techniques that have been passed down through generations. An emphasis on wellness and elements of tradition also pervade the Dining Room menu which is created from seasonal, organic produce. For a bespoke dining experience it’s possible to select your favourite ingredients from the property’s herb and fruit garden, with which the chef will rustle up a special meal.

Please note that no alcohol is served at this hotel.

We Say
It's worth noting that there's not much to do in the surrounding neighbourhood, so if you're looking for entertainment and restaurants on the doorstep this isn't the place for you.
