Amba Taipei Zhongshan
Taipei | First Class
As frequent travellers, the SA team know full well that city hotels can be a little soul-less and business-like, lacking in va-va voom! Not so the Amba Taipei Zhongshan: a design-led hotel that even from the outside stands apart from its competitors thanks to a giant pop art mural that covers one of the exterior walls.
In keeping with the Amba’s contemporary style, room interiors are un-fussy and minimalist, with a fresh feel. Whilst the monochrome décor may be a little too stripped back for some, the rooms are not lacking in comfort or amenities, and feature mod-cons galore including a full HD internet TV, Smart Wi-Fi, and a wireless Bluetooth speaker with panoramic sound. You can even rent a laptop or Xbox if you feel the need for additional technological gadgets. The Smart rooms are on the compact side, so you may wish to pay the small supplement for a room upgrade. We particularly like the Corner rooms that benefit from large picture windows that let in plenty of natural light.
Even the in-house food & beverage options have a hip, modernity. Buttermilk Restaurant, with its open kitchen and communal tables, offers a menu of American comfort food (think Beef Sliders and Gourmet Mac ‘N’ Cheese); whilst the basement MUD Bar has a speakeasy vibe and a wide choice of cocktails and craft beer. If gourmet burgers aren’t your thing, the neighbourhood of Zhongshan is home to a mouth-watering variety of dining options. A lively district where urban renewal is well underway, Zhongshan’s streets are lined with quirky boutiques, design shops, independent cafes and contemporary cultural gems such as SPOT-Taipei Film House and Taipei’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). You’re also just one metro stop away from Taipei’s main train station.
