Arugam Bay | Superior

As befits its’ name, ‘Hideaway’ is tucked away in a three-acre, secret-garden-like setting of mature trees and tropical shrubs, set back from Arugam Bay’s main strip. Built in 1979 as a family home, this charming property opened its doors to welcome guests a decade later. Still family owned and managed, it maintains a friendly, homely atmosphere.

Whether you’re a couple, surfing buddies or a family, Hideaway has accommodation suitable for all. The upper floor of the main villa houses five bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Whilst these rooms don’t feature air-conditioning, a shared, wrap-around open veranda provides natural-air cooling. Additional accommodation comes in the form of rustic, thatched-roof garden cabanas, with private verandas complete with wooden swing seats. Three of these bungalows are family-sized and can comfortably accommodate a family of four. Room interiors are simple and uncluttered: expect mosquito-net draped beds, painted timber doors, white-washed walls and a beach villa vibe.

The legendary surf breaks of Arugam Bay (A’Bay to those in the know) are all within easy access of Hideaway. Main Point – known for its sweeping right hand point break and the location for Sri Lanka’s only international surf competition - is a five minute walk away. Baby Point – a popular spot for beginners – is even closer. Surf lessons can be arranged on request and surf boards are available to hire. When you’re not ‘hanging ten’, it’s easy to while away several hours simply swinging on a hammock in the Hideaway gardens, or relaxing beside the swimming pool. Hideaway has been designed as place of calm, where guests can completely switch off from the stresses of everyday life. Twice daily yoga classes in the open-air yoga Shala, meditation workshops during peak season, and Ayurvedic treatments encourage a sense of wellbeing.

Whilst the property itself is somewhat of a hidden gem, the Hideaway’s cuisine is well-known in A’Bay. The restaurant serves deliciously wholesome, nutritious food with a focus on locally sourced, in-season produce. Sri Lankan specialities sit alongside Mediterranean dishes on the menu. The buzzy Hideaway Blue café, is a popular hangout spot during the day, largely due to its delicious homemade sandwiches, fruit-packed smoothies and unbeatable coffee. Tucked away in the gardens, the sand-floored Hide & Chill Bar has a daily happy hour from 6pm-8pm and serves a mean Espresso Martini. If you happen to be in A’Bay on a Sunday, don’t miss Hideaway’s Sunday Market: a three-course brunch complete with passion fruit mimosas, beer on tap and live jazz music.

We Say
Rustic but not shabby. Stylish but not pretentious. Laid back but not tardy.
