In both of these stylish offerings, Dwarika’s blends rich Nepalese heritage with crisp, contemporary lines to create an aesthetic that celebrates both the past and present of this extraordinary country. At the centre of the Dwarika’s story is a commitment to preserving cultural history in a living museum context, where it can still be used and enjoyed to its fullest.
Dwarika’s began in 1952 as the visionary project of its founder, Dwarika Das Shrestha. Having witnessed first-hand the destruction of many of Kathmanndu’s intricately-carved wooden buildings in the name of modernisation, Dwarika made it his personal mission to rescue as many of the beautiful carvings and structural elements as he could. By 1964, he had accumulated enough to build a Newari-style hotel incorporating all the pieces of traditional structure he had collected. Then, he employed local craftspeople to create Newari furniture and fabrics, doing his part to keep the traditional techniques alive. Out of this, the original Dwarika’s was born, and although Dwarika Das Shrestha sadly passed away in 1992, his extraordinary legacy continues today.

Dwarika's Sanctuary, Dhulikhel
On a mountainside in Dhulikhel, Dwarika’s Sanctuary is dedicated to enriching body and mind in one of Nepal’s most beautiful locations. Carved window frames and pillars are restored to their original glory, or replicated via traditional Newari techniques. Everything feels well-balanced and thoughtfully designed.
